Gabriella Hewitt is the pen name of creative writing talents Sasha Tomaszycki and Patrizia M.J. Hayashi.
How did the two of you meet?
We first met on eHarlequin.com’s Intrigue thread where we talked about writing, romantic suspense and life in general.
Was it love at first write?
Not exactly. Each of us pursued our writing careers individually. At one point we collaborated on a reader-generated online story for eHarlequin.com that turned into a popular series and developed quite an audience. We went on to win a Golden Noodle Award for our efforts. We still didn’t join forces at that point. In February 2005, both Sasha and Patrizia were frustrated with the rejections and lack of progress in their writing. They brainstormed an idea to work on. Patrizia thought it an exercise in writing and craft, but she forgot Sasha thinks BIG!
Sasha attended a writing workshop put on by author Caridad Pineiro for Latina writers and pitched the idea to an attending editor. The editor asked to see the first three chapters. Good thing since only three chapters were written. Patrizia nearly bust a gut laughing and then the two of them burned the keyboards getting that story written. And that is how a partnership was born.
Is DARK WATER your first collaborative effort?
No, it’s actually our second and definitely not our last.
How can two people write with one voice?
There are several writing teams out there and you’d probably get a different answer from each one. In our case, ego is checked at the door. If we think the story is going in the wrong direction or a character is behaving out of context, we let one another know. More importantly we don’t own our writing. We freely go in and revise and rewrite each other’s lines if necessary and in doing so, establish the voice that is Gabriella Hewitt.
What are your plans for the future?
DARK WATERS is the first of a trilogy revolving around the men and women of ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement). We also have ideas for several paranormal romance series, so stay tuned.
Tell us a little bit about yourselves…
Patrizia M.J. Hayashi lives on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan with her husband and three sons. Their Italian/American-Japanese household makes for some interesting cultural bumps. Her addiction to mystery and romance novels ranks right up there with chocolate and she is ever grateful to Amazon for opening a Japan branch, which means she no longer has to wait for that once yearly visit to the U.S. to stock up on books. The sale of Dark Waters represents her dream of being published and she looks forward to a long and successful writing partnership with Sasha, whose imagination takes Patrizia’s ideas for murder and mayhem to new levels.
Though she was born and raised in NY State, she’s spent most of her adult life overseas, and her parents have since relocated to California. She has a B.A. in Spanish from Grinnell College and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley, Walter A. Haas School of Business.
Sasha Tomaszycki has been making up stories about vampires, werewolves, fairies and other worldly creatures since she could hold a pencil. Her imagination is as wild as her background, a crazy mix of Cuban, Puerto Rican, Trinidadian, Carib, Indian, English and Chinese. (Unlike Patrizia she can’t speak a lick of any of those languages — English included).
A born and bred New Yorker, Sasha resides with her Polish-turned-U.S.-citizen husband and three children in North Carrolina. She is a repeat offender of maxing out her library card and can often be found with her nose in a book.
A graduate of Baruch College, she holds a B.B.A. in Marketing and an MS in Elementary Education from Hofstra University.|
